Why Do We Yawn? 🥱

Morning Yawners!

Whether you're sitting on the couch watching the 5th episode of a Netflix series at 2:00 in the morning.

Or whether you're at work in a boring meeting.

You can't escape the Yawn.

I mean, literally ALL humans do it.

In fact, even non-humans do it, like:

Mammals…

Birds…

And Reptiles!

But WHY exactly do we yawn…?

Well, think of your brain like a computer.

Thinking about stuff and using your brain requires a TON of energy.

And just like how your laptop starts overheating if you have more than 5 google chrome tabs open, your brain can also overheat.

So yawning is basically like your brain's personal air conditioning system.

Whenever it thinks:

It can force you to open your mouth…

And suck in a bit of air…

In order to cool things down… that's yawning!

In fact, our body temperature reaches its highest point JUST before we fall asleep.

Which is why we yawn so much before bed.

Ok, but how does yawning actually cool the brain?

Well, by stretching your jaws when you yawn, it increases the blood flow to your noggin.

And by inhaling, it sends a rush of cool air into your nose and mouth holes.

Which very slightly cools down the blood that flows up to the brain.

Making sure it… stays cool.

Which allows you to walk, talk, think, stay alert and… not die!

Yawning keeps you alive haha.
