WTF Is a Starfish?

In partnership with

Morning Sea Stars!

Ah, quite possibly the world’s most famous starfish there!

~Patrick Star~

Now, bit of a problem with Patrick Star that’s really bothering me all of a sudden.

This is how he walks:

Oops!

That came from my sexy Patrick Star collection.

This is how he walks:

That’s more like it.

So what I’ve since come to learn is this is how a starfish actually walks:

Ayo?!

WHAT ARE THESE THINGS?!

Because they have no brain

No blood

No central nervous system..

Their secret??

They pump seawater through their body to power a hydraulic system that MOVES their hundreds of tiny tube feet.

And when one of those tubes senses something like food:

Or danger:

This nerve ring around its mouth coordinates the movement of allll the other tubes to go there or run away..

Likeeeee boom!

We found a clam, food!

So our sea star pries the shell open

Turns its stomach INSIDE OUT

Pushing it into the clam

Where it releases digestive enzymes that liquify the clam outside of its body

Slurping it back up!!

Yup.

That’s what these weirdos are up to..

Stay Starry,
