Why UPS Trucks Never Turn Left
Morning UPS drivers!

Fun fact:
UPS trucks almost NEVER turn left.

WHAT??
Yeah, apparently 90% of all turns made by UPS trucks are right-hand turns.
They really don't like turning left for some reason.
But why?
Well, picture this: You’re a UPS driver

And here's where you gotta get to:

But you have 2 options…
Do you go left or right??

WRONG!
Even though the turning left might seem way quicker and better in every way, it's NOT…
It turns out left-hand turns are super inefficient.
They often require waiting at traffic lights or yielding to oncoming traffic.

And this time sat just waiting about with the engine running wastes time and fuel.
Right turns, on the other hand, are more likely to have green lights or dedicated turning lanes, which minimizes stoppage.
So even though the route is longer, it may be quicker if it means fewer left turns…

So UPS, on a mission to maximize delivery efficiency, figured this all out.
Calculating that each left turn can add an extra 30-45 seconds to a delivery.

Just because you gotta wait!
But it's not just because left turns are slower… they are actually SUPER dangerous.
You're 3 times more likely to kill a pedestrian by turning left instead of turning right.
And UPS doesn’t wanna get sued or anything.
So after figuring this out, they set up this super smart software system in each truck to calculate the most efficient and safe route to a house by minimizing left-hand turns.

And you know what… It works!
UPS says every year this left-cutting saves them more than 10 million gallons of fuel.
And allows them to deliver 350,000 more packages.
All because they don't turn left… crazy!
