Why Do We Get Motion Sickness?

Morning Pukers!

Why do we get… motion sickness?

Well, imagine you're traveling in the back of a car, plane, train, or whatever.

Your body is getting two different messages.

Your eyes are saying:

But your ears are like:

STOP!

Ear, you’re right.

But how did your EAR know that??

Well, look..

Inside the ear, there are these two hair-lined sacs filled with fluid, like this:

When you move, the fluid shifts and tickles the hairs along the side of the sacs.

Which tells your brain the exact speed and direction of your movement.

Pretty cool, right?

So your ears know exactly where you're going, but your eyes… they don't.

So why does this conflict make us feel so…

Terrible??

Well, think about it, fast-moving vehicles have only really existed for the last 100 years.

Which is nothing in evolutionary time.

Now, for most of human history, there wasn't really anything that could cause this mix up between the eyes and ears.

Except, of course, poisons.

And how does your body get rid of poisons?

You throw up!
