Where Does Water Come From?
Morning H2O’s!

You drink it.
You shower in it.
You cry it when you watch sad movies.
But where does water... come from?!
Thanks for asking.
We go back 4.6 BILLION years.
Earth looks a lot like this:

Rocky, volcanic, completely dry.
No water ANYWHERE!
But if we go out…

L! I said MORE!

Thank you.
(also shoutout L on these wonderful illustrations)
So way out here in the freezing cold depths of space, there are lone hydrogen and oxygen atoms just floating around:

And because opposites attract, they morph together and FREEZE into…

Water ICE!
So now we've got chunks of ice flying around space.

And they start colliding with…

Earth!
These collisions go on for millions and millions of years.
And every time one of these guys hits Earth, the ice melts and turns into... STEAM.

Which eventually cools down and falls as the very first rain.

Which fills up all the low spots on Earth, creating the first oceans.
Then the sun heats up the ocean water, turns it back into steam.
That steam rises, forms clouds, and eventually—rain!

This cycle has been going on for BILLIONS of years.
So, the water you drink?

It's literally asteroid water.

Stay Cute,
Henry & Dylan 🌈
