How the Invention of Dynamite Led to Viagra🧨

The invention of dynamite led to… Viagra!

Yes… you read that right.

Lemme tell you how.

So the year is 1846.

And we’ve got this Swiss chemist dude who was experimenting in his kitchen one day…

But then he accidentally spilled a mixture of Sulfuric acid and Nitric acid on the counter.

So he wiped it up with his apron.

And hung it above the stove, you know, to dry.

But then…

IT BLEW TF UP!

See, he had accidentally developed Nitrocellulose, the world’s first nitrate explosive!

Good job dude!

A little while later another chemist dude (this time an Italian) combined the same acid mixture with Glycerin which produce an oily liquid called… Nitroglycerin! 

(AKA the explosive part of dynamite)

But then he's like: 

He then had a violent headache for several hours.

Later we found out why this was.

See it turns out the Nitrate Oxide in the Nitroglycerin has this weird effect that widens blood vessels.

This led to increased blood flow which is why our Italian friend got a headache.

But It turns out this increased blood flow discovery is actually kinda useful in treating a whole bunch of different cardiovascular diseases. 

So a whole bunch of drug companies started creating new drugs using Nitrate Oxide.

One of which was the drug Sildenafil, which was being developed by Pfizer.

Unfortunately… the drug wasn’t super effective.

So, apparently Pfizer was about to pull the plug on the study but then they found the drug had an unexpected side effect…

The story goes that a particularly observant nurse noticed something strange when the male participants came in to be examined…

For some reason they would all lie down on their stomachs.

Why? 

That’s a little weird right?

Well it turns out it was because they were all hiding something…

Uncontrollable erections!

Yea! 

This magical drug later came to be known as… Viagra!
