How Your Brain READS Materials

In partnership with

Morning sponges!

No wait, actually.

Give me a normal sponge?

Yes!

How can you look at that and INSTANTLY know it’s rough and scratchy on this side…

But squishy and soft on this side??

And you can do this for pretty much every material EVER.

And you rarely get it wrong..

So how does your brain read materials??

Well, it all starts with this little guy:

A photon!

Ayo!

Alright, I guess it’s off on its way.

Watch what happens when our photon hits different materials:

Every material interacts with light differently.

  • Metal = sharp, bright reflections

  • Fabric = soft, scattered light

  • Glass = light passes through crisply

  • Wood = gives warm, diffuse reflections

And your eye is capturing ALL of these light patterns in real-time.

So give me Derd.

Give me his eye:

Here's your retina:

When that particle of light - the photon - bounces off something and comes into your eye…

Your retina records the brightness, color, contrast, and texture patterns.

Then it ships that info off to your brain…

Where it reverse-engineers the clues to figure out what CAUSED those light patterns.

But this is only half the story..

The light pattern half.

Sh*t’s about to go absolutely crazy when we travel inside your brain.
