Why Do We Get Goosebumps? 🪿
Morning Geese!
You know, goosebumps?
The little bumps you get when you’re scared, cold, or listening to some jammin’ music?
Why do we get them?
Well, take us back to like 3 million years ago.
One of our ancient ancestors was just wandering about when…
A BEAST jumps out at him!
But then… his fur goes POOF!
Yeah, back when we were covered in thick fur, goosebumps were actually kinda useful!
When we would get scared, our hair would stand on end, making us appear bigger and more intimidating.
(Just like cats do today)
Ok but what actually triggers goosebumps?
Well, when we get fearful, excited or even cold, it can release this hormone called adrenaline.
This stuff then gets pumped throughout our body and ends up triggering these tiny muscles attached to each of our hairs, called the ERECTOR-pili muscles.
And when these muscles contract the hairs… cough cough ERECT!
Making our ancestor friend’s fur look MUCH larger!
Millions of years later, goosebumps work the exact same way!
It's just we don't have a lot of hair anymore…
Stay Cute,
