The Invention of the Chocolate Chip Cookie🍪

Morning choc chip!

The chocolate chip cookie was invented… by accident!

It’s a CRAZY story, lemme tell ya.

So, meet Ruth Graves Wakefield.

Ruth, here, was born in the early 1900s, went to school for cooking and became a home economics teacher at a local high school.

But when she was just 23 years old, she married this meat packer guy called Kenneth and together they decided:

And so they did, on the toll road between Fairhaven and Boston.

They called it… the Toll House Inn!

But there was a bit of a problem… Ruth’s dishes she would cook up for the guests became TOO popular…

They became an overnight sensation!

Going from a five table operation to a 60 table operation in just 4 years!

The toll house inn became famous around the area for all the unique dishes Ruth would come up with.

Including various lobster dishes, Boston cream, lemon meringue pies.

And whatever the hell this thing is…

Trust me, she was GOOD at cooking…

But by far her most popular dish came completely by accident, sometime around 1930.

Ruth and her assistant were experimenting one time on a recipe for pecan drop cookie dough.

But then the recipe called for some baker’s chocolate, you know, the kind that would melt into the cookie like this…

Yum…

Bad news, turns out she didn't have any.

All she had was some chocolate given to her by Andrew Nestlé.

(yes, the chocolate company Nestlé)

So she was like:

So she chopped up the chocolate into little chunks…

And sprinkled them into the cookie dough.

What happened next changed the course of culinary history…

It turned out that instead of baking into the cookies, making the whole cookie a chocolatie brown color, the chocolate chunks maintained their consistency…

So the cookies remained a blonde color with little chocolate chunks!

The chocolate chip cookie was born!

And guess what, everybody loved it!

People would travel for miles to get a taste of the famous Toll house chocolate chunk cookies…

Later, Ruth sold the rights to the recipe to Mr Nestlé for $1…

And the rest is history!
